It is very easy to crotchet a blanket. As long as you know the basic crotchet stitches, this project will be easy to do. The two most important rules to remember: yarn over to make a double crotchet stitch and don’t yarn over if you want to make a single crotchet stitch.
Required Tools and Materials
Two 8 ounce skeins of color A yarn (medium weight, 4-ply)
Plastic yarn needle
Ball of color B (medium weight, 4-ply)
Measuring tape
Crochet hook size 8 (5 mm)
Step 1
Determine the color and size. For instance, a baby blanket measures 36″ W x 40″ L. if you’re making a baby blanket, you can use pink, blue or yellow pastel colors. The edges should have a darker hue.
Step 2
To determine the number of chains needed, check your yarn. Assume the yarn says a 4 x 4 swatch is 17 stitches (5 mm). If the blanket is 36 inches wide, that’s nine 4 x 4 in swatches.
That means nine swatches are equivalent to 153 chains. Add a couple of stitches at the end. This is needed for the turning. Thus, you need 155 chains.
Step 3
Chain the 155, then double crotchet in every chain across. Keep counting the stitches; there will be 153. Keep creating the 153 double crotchets in every row until the blanket is 40 inches in length.
Step 4
As you crotchet a blanket, you will eventually get to the final row. The final couple of color A loops will be left. Take the color B yarn and just pull in the new yarn. This will alter the colors.
Step 5
Using color B, single crotchet around the baby blanket. Make about 4 single crotchets. Now break the color A yarn. You will still have a six inch tail. Keep single crocheting around it. You will eventually return to the starting point.
Step 6
Break the yarn again. Make sure there is a 6 inch tail. Using the yarn needle, weave the tail at the single crotchet edge. Now thread the needle using color A’s tail. Knit this in the single crotchet edge.
Tips
The double and single crotchets are the most fundamental stitches. Make sure you know how to do this right. While basic, they can be used for other advanced stitching techniques.
Warnings
Never start a project without check gauge as stated on the yarn. You can determine the gauge easily by doing a 4 x 4 inch swatch sample. You should count the rows continuously.
If there are too many or too few, stop. Check where you went wrong. You will have to undo the crocheting and redo it. If you don’t do this, the blanket will have a lopsided appearance.
Always overestimate the yarn you need. Buy more than what you think is necessary. Assuming the label isn’t ripped, the unused skeins may be returned.
As the instructions above show, the steps needed to crotchet a blanket is easy to follow. All you need is a bit of patience to finish the project.
